Introduction & Highlights

Jizhao An Temple was initially constructed during the early Ming Dynasty and was later rebuilt during the Republican era. Nestled at the foot of the Cangshan Mountain in Dali, the temple is surrounded by towering trees, creating a serene atmosphere. The main hall faces Erhai Lake while its back rests against the Cangshan Mountain, resulting in an exceptionally tranquil setting. Despite its small size, Jizhao An Temple boasts remarkable fame, holding titles such as the most beautiful nunnery and the most artistic temple in China.

In the minds of many, temples are often associated with grand architecture and bustling incense. However, Jizhao An Temple exudes a peacefulness that lacks the solemnity typically found in temples. Rather than being just a nunnery, it resembles a courtyard filled with the melodies of birds and the fragrance of flowers. With its green brick walls and colourful eaves, it feels like an ancient and elegant backyard garden. Here, people often engage in flower cultivation as an offering to the Buddha, replacing the traditional burning of incense, while praying for good fortune.

Stepping through the entrance of the temple, you'll be surrounded by a variety of flowers and plants. You'll be amazed by the absence of the conventional temple atmosphere; instead, it resembles a poetic garden brimming with the essence of spring. Only by visiting can you truly understand the phrase, "Along the winding path to the secluded spot, the meditation room is surrounded by lush flowers and trees."

Walking along the path adorned with hydrangea blossoms, you'll be captivated by the visual and olfactory allure of the flowers and plants. Upon reaching the front courtyard, a multitude of flowers and succulent plants come into view, enticing you to pause and savor their fragrances.

Upon entering the main gate, you'll be greeted by a collection of uniquely shaped succulent plants, adorning every corner of the courtyard. Upon closer inspection, you'll discover delightful surprises everywhere. The interior of the temple exudes an air of casual sophistication, with meticulous attention to detail in every arrangement. Every succulent plant is paired harmoniously, and the old wooden boat brims with an array of them, vibrant and naturally integrated. Some plants hang in baskets, adding a touch of spring to this remote mountainous area.

Every visit brings new discoveries. Perhaps an old piece of wood, maybe an old tool from daily life, or even a beautiful flowerpot. Planting a few succulent plants casually creates a whole new world. This place seems to have become a paradise for them.

In addition to exploring, you can also taste the vegetarian meals on offer here. On the first and fifteenth day of the lunar calendar, as well as weekends, vegetarian dishes are provided for free. At other times, you can enjoy a satisfying meal for only 20 yuan.

Then, you can embark on a mountain hike, savor a pot of Zen tea, bask in the warm sun, and enjoy the serene moments of Jizhao An Temple.
