Luoping County, which is about 215.7 kilometers (134 miles) east of Yunnan’s capital city of Kunming, is on the border where Yunnan Province meets both Guizhou and Guangxi. The area is world famous for the spectacular sight of blossoming of rapeseed flowers, also known as canola, which turn the countryside into brilliant shades of yellow for as far as the eye can see.
The rapeseed flowers are usually in full bloom around February and March, which makes that the best time of year to visit. The sight attracts photographers from all over the world.
The flowers also attract bees, and the bees attract beekeepers, who set up tents in which to harvest the honey from the bees. That makes it a center of beekeeping and honey production. It’s also a center for snail farms. When the flowers fade, the rapeseed seeds are used to make the familiar canola cooking oil.
Apart from the rapeseed flowers, the landscape of Luoping is also endowed with an abundance of rivers, lakes and waterfalls.
Some of the favorite places for viewing the blossoming of the rapeseed flowers are Golden Rooster Hill, the Hundred Thousand Hills, and the Snail Field.
