Exploring Yunnan’s 5A-Lever Scenic Spot-Kunming World Horticultural Expo Garden

The Kunming World Horticultural Expo Garden (referred to as Expo Garden) was the site of the 1999 Kunming World Horticultural Exposition. Located next to the Jindian Scenic Area in the northeastern suburbs of Kunming, it is about 4 kilometers from downtown Kunming. The Expo Garden covers an area of approximately 218 hectares, with a vegetation coverage rate of 76.7%. Among the land, 120 hectares consist of dense shrub-covered gentle slopes, and water surfaces account for 10% to 15%. The overall layout of the park follows the natural terrain, incorporating the local characteristics of provinces, regions, and cities from across China, as well as the styles of 95 countries. It showcases gardens, horticultural works, courtyard architecture, and technological achievements, reflecting the theme of "Harmony between Man and Nature."

As the only complete remaining site of a World Expo, the Expo Garden has become a heritage site of global, national, horticultural, high-quality, unique, and sustainable value. With the world's largest and most original collection of gardens and horticulture, it boasts unique historical, cultural, and scenic value. On August 3, 2016, the China National Tourism Administration approved the Expo Garden in Kunming, Yunnan Province, as a 5A-level scenic spot.

Within the Expo Garden, these treasures shine brightly, offering visitors a feast for the senses. Upon entering, visitors are immediately captivated by the variety of plants. The garden features rare plants from around the world, such as the large-leaved banyan from tropical rainforests, rhododendrons from high mountains, and many other plants of special significance. These plants provide visitors with a rare opportunity to observe nature up close while also offering a place for relaxation and leisure.

The Kunming Expo Garden is renowned for its unique geographical location and diverse landscapes. The garden comprises seven themed exhibition gardens, 34 domestic exhibition gardens, and 33 international exhibition gardens. The seven themed exhibition gardens include:

  1. Arboretum
  2. Bamboo Garden
  3. Bonsai Garden
  4. Herb Garden
  5. Tea Garden
  6. Vegetable and Fruit Garden
  7. Famous Flower and Art Stone Garden (constructed after the exposition)

Additionally, there are two major outdoor exhibition areas:

  1. International Outdoor Exhibition Area
  2. China Outdoor Exhibition Area

The Expo Garden has cultivated and transplanted 2,551 species of plants, totaling over 2 million individual plants (or clusters), including 112 rare and endangered species, setting the highest standards for A1-level World Horticultural Expositions.
